Sometimes you’ll get great players who are really supportive. And then you’ll get dudes of all skill levels ready to dredge up slurs that people haven’t heard since the 1800s. You can even watch movies with them and play beer pong to keep their spirits up. In a menu, you can see their inner thoughts and feelings, like what’s making them anxious or what they want. If they bicker with each other, you can break up the argument.
I can’t change the gear used by my companions, but they steadily accrue special attacks I can trigger at any time. My crew is pretty good at using these specials themselves, but they’re close to useless when it comes to moment-to-moment combat, except when I revisit areas I’m way overpowered for. A definitive end, combined with limited time in each region, cuts down on the investment I have in the game. If there were more areas where you could farm without having to move locations, that would vastly increase my interest in The Alters as a survival title. At this moment, I view it as a well-written complex narrative adventure that merely uses the basics of survival to move the story along when there’s no dialogue to delve into. This is quite different than the majority of games in the survival genre. While the story will have an ending, you’re able to keep exploring, building your base, and crafting new items. There are three different mining stations, only five resources to mine, and one resource to grow.

The narrative journey you experience is well written, emotionally evocative, and showcases the consequences of difficult choices, especially when both options are less than ideal. It compelled me to think over the different aspects of surviving, how those decisions could effect the crew, and what I was willing to do as the leader to ensure survival for as many people as possible. The Alters is a story driven, survival game where the main character, Jan Dolski, is stranded on an unhospitable planet alone during Project Dolly.
South of Midnight delights with its looks and soundtrack, which is much better than anyone could expect. It’s a shame, though, that aesthetic experience isn’t followed by equally great gameplay. Blades of Fire stands out with its engaging combat system and weapon customization.
Unfortunately, a number of big delays (Breath of the Wild 2 and Starfield among them) took some of the wind out of this year’s sails. The first Alter I make is Jan Technician, an alter with proficiency in base maintenance, technology, and tinkering. When he wakes up, he’s understandably confused, so I explain the situation to him. The conversation quickly turns tense as he realises he’s nothing more than a tool, a means for you, Jan Prime, to survive – and he’s right. Search through the timeline where Jan went to university and completed a PhD. Choose a timeline where Jan decided to follow his partner to another country and took up gardening. You can essentially craft the perfect crew, who all have a wide range of skills for you to utilize.
There’s a lot to juggle, but everything is introduced in a way that doesn’t overwhelm you. 11 Bit Studios understands how to challenge the player without drowning you in reams of tutorials, text boxes, and management systems. If you’re not one for a challenge and prefer to focus on the story, you can switch up the difficulty options anytime from a menu. [newline]Just like in 11 Bit’s previous games, survival begins and ends with your shelter, and in The Alters, your base is situated in the middle of a great, hulking wheel. Gathering resources means actually going out onto the planet’s harsh landscape and mining directly into its surface.
This bundle will give you the remaster of Sonic Generations (aka one of the best Sonic games ever released) and the paraquel 2024 title Shadow Generations, which sees Shadow the Hedgehog face off against Black Doom.
